Trevor Stratton is an American professor and translator, newly arrived at a Paris university. There, in his office, he discovers a box filled with letters, photographs, and antique objects—a beautiful pair of gloves, a rosary, a silk scarf. Whose life is preserved here? And who has left this mystery for him to find?

The artifacts tell the story of the box’s owner, Louise Brunet, who lived in Paris through both world wars. Trevor is captivated by her tale; her unruly love for a cousin who died in WWI, her comfortable marriage to a man who works for her father, and her passionate attraction to a neighbor in her building at 13, rue Thérèse. But the artifacts tell just a part of the story. Trevor almost deliriously envisions the rest, consumed by thoughts of Louise. Or is it Josianne, his alluring assistant, who rules his imagination?

Memory, passion, and the mysteries of time are entwined in this enthralling novel, a book that transports us not just to Paris but into the mysteries of the past. Elena Mauli Shapiro’s first novel is a masterly exploration, intimate and dramatic, of the stories we imagine about others’ lives and the truths those stories reveal about ourselves.

Critique:

When I skipped through the book for the first time, I loved it. It is an epistolary novel about old objects belonging to a woman named Louise. These small elements in the plot made me loved the book. But when I started reading it, I found passages that are too explicit for my taste. The theme of sensual desire occupies the entire second half of the novel. Personally, I do not like the sexual passages in the novels I read. They diminish my appreciation of the novel. 13, rue Thérèse simply deviate from its main theme that is the discovery of a past life and understand it through objects. The novel becomes a narrative of Trevor’s fantasies of Trevor. Actually, the whole sexual aspect of the book is caused by Trevor’s fever throughout the story that causes him to confuse the past and the present.Despite the fact of my appreciation of this novel being affected, there are some unique aspects I like about this book. The novel is highly interactive and visual. Photographs and objects always keep me in suspense and I always want to know what the next artefact will be. The epistolary style with a touch of supernatural is fantastic. The mysterious recipient of the letters named "Sir" is also part of the supernatural aspect of the book. I would say no more because it will spoils the book.On the technical side, I liked the use of 2D code for smart phones at the end of the book to find the pictures on the internet.Although there are some things I liked about this novel and it is my favourite type of novel: the epistolary novel, My disliking of sexual passages in the novel made it so that this novel is one of the worst that I have read.
1/5
