My Thoughts On, Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon

This book is my first contact with Nicola Yoon. I read it because it had an interesting premise. A girl on house arrest for medical reasons. Her new neighbors are kind but a boy specifically catches her eyes. How can a romance bloom between the two when she is in danger from everything? I love how this medical aspect is an essential part of the story without making the plot heavy or gloomy. This novel still have the lightness of a usual YA story of a girl meet boy and they have obstacles to overcome to be together.  Yet it is original in its writing and in the interwoven details that make the characters three dimensional.
It was a fast read and I enjoyed every page of it.

My Thoughts On - All The Bright Places by Jennifer Niven

I love this book so much I hate it. I love how it made me laugh at the beginning, how it made me grin like an idiot in the bus. I love how genuine the relationship between Theodore and Violet was , how wonderful for these two souls to find each other, to comfort each other. But I hate it too. I hate it for the endless tears I shed,  for making me love Theodore and then putting me face to face with the unchanging reality. I hate it for giving me no place to hope for a different ending. I felt loss, anger and despair. I knew no matter how much I read and went further into the story, Theodore's faith was unchanging and there is nothing I could do to shake off the sense of helplessness that came over me. I hated this book so much I love it.

All the bright places is real, raw, epic and a must read.

Book Promotion - FOREST PARK: Logan Book 2 by Valerie Davisson

Hello everyone!

Take a look at this new book from Valerie Davisson! A link to sample is added below. Try it and if you like it, buy it! Enjoy!

Summary

Critical choices made in the drama and chaos of the last days of the Vietnam War reach across the Pacific to modern-day Portland, Oregon, threatening to destroy the lives of those who managed to cheat death in 1975. When a violent explosion takes a woman’s life just steps away from Logan McKenna’s downtown hotel, the police suspect all the wrong people, including a homeless vet and two of Logan’s new friends; but are any of them completely innocent?

While unraveling the tangle of half-truths and secrets to help her friends, Logan’s personal life suffers an explosion of its own. Each character must decide not only whom to trust, but at what cost.

In addition to writing a great story, in FOREST PARK: Logan Book 2, Davisson skillfully deals with tough questions about our attitude toward refugees, immigration, the homeless, and our military vets. Through the eyes of her original and complex characters, she invites us to explore the true nature of hope, redemption, family, character, and love.

Author Bio

Born in the county hospital in French Camp, California, Valerie 's childhood started out normally. Her father was becoming a CPA, her mother, a stay-at-home Mom. But within a few short years, the family, her mother 7-months pregnant, boarded a plane to Munich, Germany. They embarked on what was to become a life of travel, eventually living in Germany, Japan, Italy, and both coasts of America. It was the perfect childhood for an imaginative, curious, little girl.

Anticipating every new house, apartment and back yard, she always expected to find secret compartments or hidden passageways. The creek behind her home in Virginia led to many excursions rife with water moccasins and painted turtles, including one particularly dangerous encounter raiding the neighborhood boys' tree house. The clearly marked "NO GIRLS ALLOWED!" seemed like an open invitation to her 12-year-old self.

Always preferring to work outside with her dad, rather than do housework indoors with her mother and sister on a sunny, Saturday afternoon, when it came time to get a job in high school, she opted for anything other than one stuck behind a desk. So, in spite of the fact that she'd never taken swimming lessons, she flailed her way through the lifeguard qualification tests and became one of the first female lifeguards ever hired in town.

The next year, when she went away to college, and needed a little more money than waitressing provided, she applied for the job of manager at a pizza place nearby. When the owner told her he was thinking of paying "a man with a family" $700 a month, she said, "That will be fine, I'll take it." She was, again, the first female ever hired for that job. Years later, a dance studio wanted her to sign a contract stating if she got pregnant in the first year of employment she'd have to pay a $2,000 fine. A newlywed, she promptly quit and proceeded to get pregnant with her first son.

A self-admitted book addict, Valerie was the kid with the flashlight under her pillow. A life of travel with exposure to many different cultures led to a pervasive interest in people, with degrees & teaching credentials in Cultural Anthropology & English.

Writing and Teaching became twin passions, and she feels lucky to pursue both. With the support and distraction of her husband, John, their 6 children, a growing tribe of grandchildren, and a very supportive Girls' Night group, she is hard at work on Book 3, Logan's next adventure.

If you like Nevada Barr’s Anna Pigeon, J. A. Jance’s Sherriff Joanna Brady, Elly Griffith’s Ruth Galloway, or Sue Grafton’s Kinsey Milhone, you’ll love Davisson’s independent, strong, female protagonist, Logan McKenna!

My thoughts On - Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined by Stephanie Meyer

26874617

Twilight is one book you either love or hate. I happen to be on the love side and I enjoyed this fantasy book with all it twists and kinks along the way. So when I knew Stephanie Meyer is presenting a reimagined version of Twilight for its 10 years anniversary I couldn't be happier.

Pride and Prejudice - My obsession with this simple, elegant story

Miss Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy have a charming magic to their simple and elegant relationship which made Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice a classic many enjoyed reading, rereading and retelling too.
I came across this gem of a story in an unconventional way. It all started with my love for the Japanese comics, the manga.

Carey.

Book Promotion - Embracing the Wild in Your Dog by Bryan Bailey

Short Summary
Some time ago, dogs became as interwoven in the American culture as baseball, apple pie and the Fourth of July. In fact, in most households, the dogs have even trumped evolution itself and jumped straight to being four legged humans where they are adorned with human names, designer outfits and fed diets that would confound even the best nutritionist. In most cases, we've granted them our human intelligence and our sacred human emotions as well. They are no longer dogs to us, they're family! Yet, for all that man has done to carve the wolf from the wild to create a surrogate human, today's dog is still a wolf at heart and the accompanying instincts borne from such ancestry defines how the dog approaches its world.
The ontogeny of anthropomorphism, where we attach our human traits to our pets, is the most damaging and paralytic problem associated with dog ownership today. Believing in a fairy tale world where dogs possess the same moral consciousness and a sense of altruism as attributed to humans has led to a drastic increase in leash laws, dogs being outlawed in a rising number of city and national parks, some breeds being banned in several states, an alarming escalation of aggression to humans, a rising cost in homeowner and business insurance, and a record number of clinically maladaptive dogs.
This book is not a training book. It does not cover obedience topics such as heel, sit, down, stay, and come. Instead, it's about righting the ship of American dog ownership by changing our perception of our dogs. It is about the author growing up in the Alaskan wild under the tutelage and guardianship of a Special Forces survival instructor who introduced him to the ways of wolves and the similarities they shared with dogs. It is about the wisdom and splendor of nature and the many life lessons she provides. Mostly, it about developing a deep understanding of the authors of your dog's behavior; nature and the wolf. In doing so, you will truly learn who and what your dog really is and the whys and hows of its behavior. You will learn the tools that nature gave them to survive and coexist in both the mountains and in our homes. You will learn how activating and deactivating natural impulses and mechanisms in your dog will lead to the harmonious existence and the control you always dreamed of. Most of all, you will come to embrace the wild in your dog and the grace and the peace that is breathed into its acceptance.”

Author Bio
Raised in Fairbanks, Alaska, Bryan Bailey grew to appreciate the wildness of the land and its abundant wildlife. In particular, he developed a fondness for the gray wolves that roamed the vast mountain ranges and forests near his home. Under the guidance of a Special Forces Survival Instructor, he spent years studying the social interactions of wolves in their packs and discovered that, beyond obvious physical similarities, there were also behavioral similarities between the wolves and the sled dogs that were his family's pets.
Today, with over thirty years of education and experience studying wolves and other predators, Bryan has become a Master at understanding how nature has influenced the inner workings of the canine mind. Taking his cue from nature, Bryan utilizes her lesson plan to shape the behaviors in our dogs that are necessary for them to conform to our human existence. By doing this, and accepting the dog for the domestic wolf that it is, Bryan produces a dog that responds to his owner's commands with not only steadfast reliability, but with the spirit and vitality of the wolf.
Bryan is currently busy writing his second book, "The Hammer - Understanding Canine Aggression." He hopes the book will educate readers about the most dominant tool in the wolf and dog's bag of survival equipment - Aggression (The Hammer). This tool has allowed for ingestion, digestion, reproduction and survival by wolves for thousands of years in a very hostile and competitive world and it was passed to our dogs. Its use by our dogs is often misinterpreted and misunderstood and this has led to an increase in avoidable attacks to dog owners and their children.

Bryan and his wife, Kira, live on the banks of the Mississippi River in Memphis, TN, with their children, dogs and cats.  Together they own ProTrain Memphis and Taming the Wild.

  5. S'amuser en lisant!
